Bozho! I’m Barry Phillips, son of Alice (Pigeon) Phillips, and grandson of Sampson and Eliza (Medawis) Pigeon. I’m a Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi (NHBP) member and tribal Education Director. I went to school in nearby Union City. I attended Kellogg Community College and earned a B.A. from Western Michigan University. My major is English and minor is French. With my teaching certification, I taught one year at Battle Creek Lakeview and two years at Saginaw Chippewa Academy, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan before moving back to my tribe when this department started. I’m also a licensed soccer coach and coached at both the high school and college levels for both genders.
I’m father of Bryant and Amy and grandfather of Jordan, Drew, Stella, Hayley and Kaelin . My hobbies are golf, spectator sports, kids’ activities, reading, and pow-wows.
With a belief in life-long learning, I’m excited about our tribal direction and our educational goals! Enhanced learning opportunities will make the NHBP stronger as a people and better informed citizens of the tribal and greater communities.
