The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi currently reside on the Pine Creek Reservation.
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi finally received federal acknowledgement in 1995, over a century and a half after their attempted removal.
Before Michigan became a state the people who traveled through this territory were known as the people of the three fires. The Ojibwa, Odawa and the Bodewadomi made their homes here and met in councils to discuss their concerns. Each group had a specific responsibility: The Ojibwa (Chippewa) were the Keepers of the Faith, the Odawa (Ottawa) were the Keepers of Trade and the Bodewadomi (Potawatomi) were the Keepers of the Fire. The Potawatomi have maintained their cultural role as: The Fire Keepers.
Tribal Historian : Virginia Anewishki
I am the mother of one daughter, Robin; and I have three grandchildren, Tammy, Trisha and Tracy. I am a member of the NHBP Tribe. My mother is the former Beatrice Henry who was a member of the Huron Potawatomi. My father was Alex Anewishki who is Odawa of the Grand Traverse Band. I was born on the Pine Creek Reservation and have lived near here my entire life. I love to go to Pow wows and I enjoy attending the annual Gathering of the Potawatomi Nations.
I am a tribal elder and I am currently a member of the Elders Council. I have been Chairperson of the Cemetery Committee for the past eight years and I am also active on many other committees such as the Election Board and the Enrollment Committee. I have worked as an employee and a volunteer for the Tribe in many different capacities starting back in the 1970's. I am happy to be serving the Tribal members in my current role as Tribal Historian and helping with many of the important programs.
